A painting day with friends on the far side of Portland Harbour on a windy, brisk day. The Isle of Portland stood in clear profile against the dramatic, threatening sky, full of movement and shifting light. I began with a delicate watercolour sketch on site, capturing the initial mood, and later developed the scene in oils on panel back in my studio. The real challenge was to convey those wonderful, subtle changes of colour and the dynamic shapes swirling in the sky.
